I received a update notice for my Dell DataSafe online app. The update download started and something went extremely wrong — I lost all my data documents, pictures, file, etc. The message reads… Please wait…. My question is, how long do I let his run before admitting defeat?

Finally I run a Hardware test by pressing F12 similar when starting up pressing F8. Follow the instructions and found out that I have the hard driver with error. I had to change my hard drive. That was my case! I get a black screen that reads: Windows is loading files… With a solid white bar below the text.I have tried this three times on three separate laptops, with poor results. Windows 7 on two of them and 8. I first boot it off of a live disk and backup any desired files.

Then I boot, press F8, choose "Repair your computer" and discover that "Dell Factory Image Restore" is not one of the available options It may or may not have ever been run before. If it is absent I download it and install it. When I run DBaR it tells me it needs to update, don't power off or disconnect the machine from the internet, etc.

When done it tells me I need to create my "Factory Restore" media, which I do. Power the pc off and reboot it from the recovery media I have just created or off the harddrive using F8. The harddrive races for several minutes, but only minutes and the pc reboots by itself, but only as far as a Windows Boot Manager error: 0xcf.

When it is done the desktop is the same as before - same software, same drivers, desktop, all of it. This is not a "Factory Restore". Curious, I install a piece of software. I run the factory restore again. The software I installed is gone, nothing else has changed.

I am simply trying to return these PCs to a Factory "like new" state, am I missing something here? I would like to discover how to use DBaR to return a ruined OS to factory state instead of making no change or making it worse.

I personally have never worked with Dell Backup and Recovery but have re-imaged plenty of computers. In my opinion the best option is to load a fresh version of the OS from removable media. I think the fresh installs are better than the factory image from any company because there is no bloatware.A network error has occurred. Some data is missing.

To prevent losing the missing data permanently, try restoring your data again before backing up. I have tried everything - Resetting back to Factory again and choosing not to connect my Gmail account and only connect my Samsung account, vice versa, not connecting to either account and just going directly into the Samsung Restore, but each and every time it does the exact same thing I really really really would like my backed up text messages back.
